Dobson's Delimma

October 9, 2007 / by willlangford

Let me begin by saying that I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Dobson.  Over the years he has been a wonderful advocate for the unborn.  So I have a strong appreciation for his ministry.

With that said, I was some what surprised by his recent revelation that he cannot support Rudy, Fred, or John if they are the republican candidate for President.  Dr. Dobson has made it clear that these three do not embrace his Christian values and therefore he cannot support them. For him it is a matter of principle.  I guess it surprised me because if the Christian right divided it makes it even easier for the democrats to seize the White House...which will not help in the fight for the unborn.

Now for my question.  What do you think of his stand?  Do you think it is right for a Christian to vote for the lesser of two evils?  Just curious about what you all are thinking.

Blessings

Will

Good question Will. I believe that we need to vote. I am more for Thompson right now. I don't believe I could vote for Rudy because of his stance on issues that go against the Christian faith. It is a tough decision for sure.

i think Christians have fallen into the trap of relying on the united states government to "protect" our beliefts and maintain a societal order in which we are comfortable.

Abortion is absolutely wrong, yet it is currently legal and the U.S. gov't will never turn it around. We've had a president for seven years who ran on a "christian morals" platform, and look at how un-improved the abortion situation is in america.

The same goes for homosexual-marriage/rights. changing mere laws do nothing to extinguish the sin itself.

The unbelieving world sees the Church in america merely boycotting and protesting things that "offend" us. We need to realize that the only solution is Jesus Christ. Leading these people to the Savior is the only remedy.

There has never been, and never will be, a savior on capitol hill.

Now, as far as choosing a candidate, it amazes me how the Republicans have completely monopolized the "Christian" vote. We claim to vote for the candidate who "supports christian morals and ideals". In actuality, these politicians are merely giving lip-service support in opposition to gay marriage and abortion, and we thing that as Christians, we are obligated to vote for them.

All the while, we ignore the millions and millions of sick, starving, enslaved, displaced people around the world. Are these not issues of our Faith? We support the banning of abortion (which in reality will never happen) and gay marriage (which seems inevitable, and still doesn't dissolve homosexuality anyway), yet ignore the millions of people who die each week from malnutrition and genocide. The democrats certainly have a better grasp on this issue, although not necessarily from a "faith-centered" reasoning.

My point is, christians can/should vote if they wish, but the bottom line is, it doesn't matter. We have to live our lives as sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. We have a mandate from Christ himself to reach this world for Him. And here we are, looking for politicians to do this?! It's time for christians to wake up and realize that this world IS against us, for they do not know God. It is our job to infiltrate the world and spread the Good News of Christ. it's not the government's job.

Neither side in my opinion will ever bring an end to abortions, nor will gay marriage be taken off the table, at least not in my lifetime I believe. Politicians, especially on the right, like to confuse people with these "wedge" issues to pander to large groups of people such as religious groups, in order to greatly increase turn out for them and to allow churches to provide free "indirect" endorsement of their candidacy. If the Republicans had wanted to end abortions, they would have done so when they had the majority in the house and senate with Bush in office, but they didn't. Many on the right in fact supported "forced-abortions"

So I believe, that the values that people should be assessing is corruption, illegal wars, civilian casualties, torture, hunger & poverty increases in our nation, fiscal irresponsibility, illegal wiretapping, and our worsening economy. All of which republicans have played key roles in enabling.
