As I have watched the news today....I have sat here amazed by the remarks of former President Jimmy Carter. Actually, I was shocked by his remarks. Not that he feels the way that he does but that he actually verbalized those remarks. One thing I have admired about former Presidents in the past was that they seemed to be statesman. They each know how difficult the job is and therefore, are slow to speak out publicly. However, this has not been the case with President Carter. The former President has made several comments like this...for example, the remarks at Mrs. King's funeral.
As read President Carters remarks, my first thought was "have you forgotten your own administration?" I have not forgotten the four miserable years he served as President. Even I remember long gas lines, high inflation, and a poor foreign policy. The truth is that President Carter was weak both domestically and in foreign policy. I am not trying to be disrepectful to the former President...but if you live in a glass house, you shouldn't throw stones.
I realize that President Bush is receiving a great deal of criticism. I know that President Bush has not been perfect. But so far, in his tenure the economy has been strong and since 9/11 we have not had another attack on our soil.
I don't know what is up with President Carter. Perhaps he is trying to paint his administration in a better light. And perhaps this unpopular war gives him the perfect opportunity to remake his immage. Whatever is up, it makes me sad that I won't be able to remember him as a respectful statesman.
